arm Some years back, I spent a long period by my sister while she was in the hospital. We talked, we sang, but mostly, we drew together. She could draw anything and had an inherent grasp of human anatomy. I fumbled and learned, and enjoyed myself to no end.
woman The human body, especially a woman's body, is a source of endless shapes and curves. One could get lost without having to roam very far.
Jefferson Part of my awakening to the joys of illustration was the belief that capturing the essence of a subject relied not so much on a live model as an understanding of the essential person within. This drawing of Thomas Jefferson got me thinking about the man behind the wistful eyes, the firm mouth, the elegant hair.
Audrey I have a dear friend who lives in Santa Barbara whose neighbor was considered the street's most-outlandish "character" -- which, on that street, was saying something. Her name was Audrey, and this portrait attempted to capture some of her whimsy, complexity, and charm.
